The fifth exhibition of the Year of Fashion at Beit Ha'ir, opening on Monday 29/10, presents fashion as a tool for social promotion and rehabilitation. The exhibition manoAmano seeks to examine how fashion serves as a social and political bridge between different societies. The rehabilitation process of communities under distress is made possible through the study of craftsmanship and tradition. The exhibition will focus on the Italian fashion brand Cangiari, a fashion house established with the tutorship of Santo Versace, aiming at improving the socio-economic status of the Calabria Region in southernItaly.

The exhibition will present the work process of Cangiari –local materials such as yarn and silk, hand-loom fabrics weaved by craftswomen according to Calabrese tradition that sinks its roots in the antique Greek and Byzantine periods, as well as tools, weaving equipment and the final product: contemporary high quality designs shown in the Italian Fashion Week.

Cangiari is the first and sole ethical fashion brand in the high segment of the Italian fashion. Cangiari has created a unique system supporting social responsibility: rehabilitation of local communities by providing jobs for disadvantaged and weakened people, local, biologic and organic production, along with a steady presence in the commercial fashion scene. Cangiari fashion house has been awarded several prizes for its eco-friendly activity such as the Paris Sustainable Luxury Fair for sustainable production, the respect for human rights and the value of workmanship.

Cangiari is part of the GOEL Cooperative Group – bringing together many social enterprises in the Calabria Region, it works for the change and rehabilitation of the local community and for its liberation and economic independence from any type of illegal operations in the local area. Cangiari” means “to change” in the Calabrian dialect, to change, on a personal, communal level, but also to make a difference inside the fashion industry.

In addition to Cangiari, the exhibition will present other local social organizations working towards social change through fashion: among which Achoti Organization – a social feminist movement promoting women of oriental origin, supporting social, economic and cultural equity, and encouraging the solidarity of women of low financial and social status. Achoti Organization runs a fair trade shop, which distributes unique products of women from around the country and handmade fabrics of Bedouin, Ethiopian and Palestinian women.

The organization Turning the Tables, working for the self-encouragement and financial independence of women leaving prostitution by providing them with the skills of fashion design.

The Kuchinate Project, a collective of African asylum seeking women in Tel Aviv, working to produce environmentally friendly products for the home, such as baskets and carpets. The activity is an important process for psychological and social rehabilitation and economic empowerment.

The exhibition will also include the young designer Anat Martkovich, Shenkar graduate, who will present the work "Bodies" in which she turns second hand clothes into sculptural objects. Artist Gil Yefman, who uses knitting, with its traditional and therapeutic virtues, as means to dwell on personal and collective traumas. The artist Boaz Aharonovitch will present video works of organic macrocosms. Ophir Toubul, editor of the blog Café Gibraltar, will create a sound piece and artist Avi Milgrom will exhibit the work "Augmented Memory".
